Tis The Season To Not Forget Your Job Search

One can always hope that on the first day of Christmas your true love gives you, “A job with a Big Salary”; however it is far more likely they are going to give you a firm kick and tell you to step up that job search either because you need a job, or you want a better one! The question is how do you go about this task in December?

Like the weather, December brings an interesting mix to the job market. There are simply not a lot of new jobs coming on to the market. At the same time, the jobs that are still posted most likely urgently need to get filled. If it’s the end of November or early December and you are in the middle of an interview process, be prepared for things to move very quickly. Sure, timing can be difficult with hiring managers heading out on vacation, seasonal parties, and general end of year budget wrap ups, but here are three things you can and should be doing to keep up with that job search.

December is a very social time of year. This is an opportunity for you to get the word out that you are open to opportunities. People are expecting to touch base with their network, and typically they have more time to reconnect. Focus on the relationship, but be prepared with a brief synopsis of what you are looking for so that you can give people a mental marker. Your network will include friends and business relationships, as well as your recruiter who has their finger on the pulse of the market.

While potential employers are busy decking the halls, use this time to deck out your resume. Find job postings that are a close match to what you are looking for and review the job requirements. Does your resume reflect the needs of the employer? Do you know of someone who would take a few minutes to look over your profile and critique it for you or provide you with some resume tips?

The changes that have happened with the internet as pertains to networking and job search are incredible, and things continue to evolve in amazing ways. Technology can be your friend or your foe – stay on top of the latest changes and trends. From the first day to the last, may your job search be merry and bright!
