Millennials and Generation Z individuals make up a large portion of the job market, and it’s becoming increasingly important to attract and retain these candidates in any company. The two groups often get lumped together but they are quite distinct. Generation Z or Post-Millennials are individuals born in 1995 or later, and they’re expected to make up a significant portion of the job force in the next three to five years. Here are a few things to keep in mind when looking for your next Generation Z employees:
1. Think about technology
Generation Z individuals are particularly tech savvy, even more so than their Millennial counterparts. Make sure you think about technology and how you incorporate it in your company, particularly with your onboarding and training processes. Ensure that you’ve created an environment where technology and innovation are highly valued.
2. Look to their future
This generation's workers in particular tend to be job hoppers. If you don’t want these employees looking for jobs elsewhere in the foreseeable future, you have to be able to provide them with an outlook for their future in the company. Where would you like them to be? What are their goals and how will you help them achieve them?
3. Multitasking
In general, this group may be less focused but also better at multitasking. They are more comfortable switching back and forth between many tasks. This generation is used to doing their schoolwork while watching a TV show, sending emails and text messages, while keeping up with social media.
4. Value independence
Generation Z workers have a tendency to prefer working independently as opposed to working collaboratively in teams. They like to manage their individual work that can really showcase their own ideas and skills. This goes hand-in-hand with their competitive nature and motivation to work hard to highlight their abilities, and be rewarded.
