Focus on Becoming a Dream Company Not Having Dream Jobs

You hear a lot of talk about “dream jobs.” Supposedly, every top candidate is seeking out the ideal position…and every employer has to create that role in order to compete.

However, this concept has its limits. The “dream job” ideal might sound good in the abstract. But, in practice, the notion proves too narrow. To attract the best talent, you don’t want to offer dream jobs. You want to become a dream company.

That’s why employer brands have become such an important part of the recruitment process. Candidates don’t just look at a particular job. They are swayed by the reputation of the company as a whole. As a result, a strong employer brands have been associated with a 28% reduction in turnover and a 50% increase in qualified candidates.

How do you start receiving these benefits? First, lay aside concerns about creating the perfect job. Instead, focus on your overall organization. Here are a few notes to keep in mind as you seek to become a dream company:

Upgrade Your Team Building

When you focus too narrowly on a single position, you limit your options. You could miss out on the best talent. You might hire a person who exactly matches a specific job. But they could have very little upside.

By becoming a dream company, you leverage a broader approach. Don’t just hire to fill a constrained set of responsibilities. Judge your candidates as complete people. This will let you hire employees who can grow over time

Jobs Evolve Quickly as Markets Change

You hire someone to fill a specific job. That’s great for Day One. But what about Day Two? Or Day 10? Or Day 435? Will your new employee be ready for the changing demands of the position?

You can’t lock into a dream-job mindset for the simple reason that jobs aren’t fixed concepts. Roles change over time. New tools and new demands force you to alter priorities and requirements. As a result, you’re better off taking a more holistic approach.

Focus on Enabling Careers

You hope your best employees stick with you for a long time. However, you can’t expect them to stay in the same job year after year. One study indicated that more than eight out of ten workers (82%) point to a lack of progress as a reason to quit an employer.

Recognize this kind of ambition in your best employees. Lock in those top performers by enabling them to grow with the company. You can do these in a number of ways:

  • Sponsor mentorship programs
  • Offer on-the-job training
  • Promote from within
  • Pay for college courses

By taking these steps, you move beyond the “dream job” constraint. Instead, new recruits can sign up for a relationship that enables their career development over the long term. This makes it easier to attract high-value employees in the first place. It also lets you keep your best workers over the long haul.

Even when you become a dream company, you still have a problem: finding those dream candidates. A high-level staffing agency, like Recruiting In Motion, can do this for you.
