Hiring New Grads

It’s the time of year again when new university and college graduates are looking for jobs. Although the influx of potential candidates is great for filling any unoccupied positions, there are a few things to keep in mind when hiring your new employees straight out of school.

New graduates are generally quite excited to get into the work force but make sure you give these potential employees a thorough interview to gauge their maturity, and ability to work and excel in your company. There is no doubt that new graduates will need some extra training and as such, it can be very important to ensure that they will be able to adapt to the work-place environment. You will want to hire a new graduate who won’t get overwhelmed.

Keep an eye on the professional experience that candidates were able to acquire while they were in school. Internships and part-time experience can be key indicators of a new graduate’s preparedness to enter the full-time job force. Internships in particular are also great indicators of a candidate’s desire to be in your particular field because they’ve had the opportunity to be exposed to the industry while they were in school.

Think about any holes you may have within your company. Are you looking to implement a more comprehensive digital strategy or maybe simply looking for more creative ideas? New graduates can be a breath of new energy and are generally more technologically minded, which you can use to your advantage. That being said, make sure you bring on a new graduate who has the maturity to develop and share their ideas in a constructive manner.

Last but not least, remember that technical skills shouldn’t be the “be-all and end-all” for a new hire, but make sure you know which technical skills are imperative for the position. Some training is understandable but you don’t want to slow down the rest of your team with lengthy training and supervising for menial day-to-day activities. The more aware you are of the requirements for the job the easier it is to sift through a large number of resumes from a batch of new graduates.

This time of year is the perfect time to bring on a new hire with a new graduating class actively for jobs. Just remember to do your due diligence to ensure they are the right fit for your company, and your company is the right fit for them, so you can mutually benefit from the experience.
